Axxicon focusses on 4 main product groups: Microfluidics, Ultra Precision Parts, AIM Moulds and Optical Media. In 1981 Axxicon produced the first optical media mould (CD) for Philips. In the 3 decades since, Axxicon was marked leader in mould manufacturing for this business. Today, Axxicon is the only OEM which sells optical media moulds directly to the marked. The optical media business is a cash cow. The market is declining because Blu-ray never became a real success compared to DVD. Axxicon still sells optical media moulds however most profit is generated from selling spares and repairs for Axxicon moulds but also for former competitors. The big replicators as Technicolor, Cinram and Arvato are our customers.

Axxicon is also market leader in mould systems to the polymer industry for injection moulding of test specimen. The AIM (Axxicon Iso Manufactured) mould system fully complies with all the requirements for an ISO approved injection mould. Mould systems are sold to companies as Sabic, BASF and DOW. Our factory is fully equipped to reach the ever-increasing high technical qualifications, which are expected of these parts and we also offer our customers the full service concept. All of our moulds are being validated and tested in our own technical centre, so customers will get a mould that is 100% ready to produce.

The High-Tech market progressively demands a full scale solution for the production of complex parts and systems with ultra-precise tolerances. Axxicon produces ultra-precision parts and systems by turning, grinding, lapping, polishing and assembly in a climate controlled production facility. For 3 years Axxicon focusses on the enabling the production of microfluidic consumables. Axxicon herewith made the strategic choice to transfer business from mould making to injection moulding of medical disposables.

Since five years Axxicon is developed tooling and injection moulding technology to injection mould various microfluidic consumables in different  polymers:

  • Direct micro machining of mould inserts
  • Micro machining of masters. Followed by electroforming to plate a Nickel shim which is the mould insert.
  • Polishing of optical features
  • Injection compression moulding processes to improve replication rates and to reduce warpage and stress
  • Injection moulding through holes with injection compression process.
  • Demoulding processes to prevent deformation of the microstructures
  • Bonding process using UV lacquer to seal the fluidic chip.

Axxicon’s business model is changing from selling moulds to selling polymer microfluidic consumables. We’ll be the enabling partner for low costs and large scale production for companies as Pimbio. We specialize in the niche of microfluidic consumables since this fits our competences. Our revenues for coming years will come from prototyping to mass production by producing plastic microfluidic substrates with micro- and or nanometer

features in various kind of plastics and the production of complete bio-functionalized, metalized, bonded and quality inspected cartridges.

Development of a microfluidic consumable and its production process requires significant expertise across multiple disciplines. The required technologies cannot be found under one roof. Axxicon therefore relies on collaboration with partners for specific technologies and know how. Costs for micro structured mould inserts are high but depend.

The technology above will be used in the Pimbio project and of course specific details have to be further developed.
